The Sinner's Guide to the Evangelical Right

This was a review I posted on Facebook's Bloglike notes page back on Nov 22, 2007. 
It came up in my FB memories today but I was unable to link to it, so I've copied it here. 
I no longer have the book but I'd be interested to re-read it today to see if I had the same take on things. 
What I like about it is some of the quite humorous and spot on quotes.

The sinner's guide to the Evangelical Right

This book was written by a journalist who set out to explore the evangelical right and explain it to those outside the church. He was raised in an evangelical home so had a decent understanding of the subculture coming into it


I forget where I heard about this book, but I ordered it just to see “what the other side” thought. It started out fairly balanced, though it was it is a difficult book to read from the get-go. As it went on, it seemed to descend into mean-spiritedness. Still even at its most painful moments, it is also quite funny.

An interesting feature of the book is that they have taken 5 everyday evangelicals and gotten quotes from them on some of the issues that are discussed. These are included as sidebars. A nice idea, but with the exception of one, the people chosen seemed a bit off the wall in their beliefs and not what I would consider to be evangelicals. [Note 2024: I'm curious how I would evaluate these people today given what has transpired in the evangelical church since then].

The outsider’s take on the evangelical culture is interesting and often spot-on. (See his definition of prosperity gospel below).
He criticizes people and ministries for many of the same things we would find questionable: prosperity gospel, wealthy televangelists, the church’s lack of concern for the poor and the environment, etc. Unfortunately, Lanham is too quick to throw out the baby with the bath water.

Megachurches:
p. 40, “Most megachurch pastors have wives who wear blouses with shoulder pads.
“Some have started referring to larger ones as gigachurches, but we don’t want to encourage them.”
p. 42, Megachurches try to be “relevant” so as to “attact younger churchgoers because they don’t have that ‘old person smell’ you encounter at your granny’s Church of the Redeemed Heart. Plus the dress is casual. Sermons are about current issues. And the music rocks hard, like on American Idol”.

Seeker Sensitive:
p. 59, “Seeker Sensitive churches try to get sinners to attend by using theatrics, gimmicks, feel-good preaching, and . . . Christian martial arts classes where you can learn to kick butt ‘the Christian warrior way’. On the surface, seeker-sensitive churches usually seem tolerant and progressive, but as we’ll demonstrate, they’re pulling a bait and switch.
“Many churches have become multimillion-dollar companies that like any other business, want to keep growing. It’s logical they would want to attract the unchurched. Sinners represent the largest untapped potential tithing demographic.” So pastors will “let the coals cool down a bit on their fire and brimstone to keep the crowds from turning away. The Jesus of the seeker-sensitive movement doesn’t walk on water. He walks on eggshells.”

Glossary (p. 217 and following):
Fellowship: Christians don’t hang out. They ‘have fellowship’. And usually while sharing Reese’s Pieces Sundaes at Friendly’s.
Get your praise on: The evangelical equivalent of “are you ready to rock?!” Popular with youth ministers who have goatees and an earring.
Prosperity Gospel: The belief that the all-powerful God allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross by a heckling crowd of sandal wearers so that their born-again offspring – at least the self-righteous, extra-devoted ones who give money to televangelists – could all own brand-new Ford Explorers and McMansions.
Spiritual Warfare: . . . Spiritual Warfare would also be a fantastic name for a Christian paintball company.

Sloth and Those who hunger for a life made right

I just came across this book review I posted to Facebook 6 years ago today. I didn't have my blog then, I think i will repost it here.
I'm reading the book "Seven: The deadly sins and the beatitudes" by Jeff Cook.

He pairs up the 7 deadly sins with the beatitudes saying they are flip sides of each other:
  • Pride vs the Poor in Spirit
  • Envy vs the Mourner
  • Greed vs the Mercy Giver
  • Sloth vs Hungering and Thirsting for Righteousness
The chapter on sloth is really good.
Some quotes:
"At its core, sloth moves us away from everything that ultimately matters and directs us toward simple distractions. Sloth is not mere laziness. Sloth is indifference toward my soul, my neighbors, my world, or my God. Drug users, TiVo Addicts, ... may be poisoned by sloth, but so are most workaholics. Sloth is not restfulness. Sloth is escapism of the deadly sort."
p. 69: "Slot is best expressed not by a lazy attitude but by zeal over petty matters. . . A heart at once so sensitive to minor things and so strangely insensitive to the greatest."

p. 79 Sloth is very western. Despite our fast-moving society, we "invest our energies and talents most often in what is trivial." "Sloth is content to aim us toward either apathy or fanaticism. All that matters is that the target is worthless".

Cook looks at the Parable of the Talents. The unfaithful servant BURIED his master's talent, showing him what he thought of the master and his pursuits. "They were dead to him".

On the other hand, the faithful servants were invited to "Come and Share in their master's happiness" which was NOT what masters did with slaves in that time. Pretty radical.

Similarly, the Parable of the Wedding Feast has the king inviting people to this feast but throwing out one man who was poorly dressed. Why? Because he was too lazy to dress for the wonderful occasion. To stay inside with the king, you had to be passionate about the king's concerns.

In both parables, Jesus pairs the slothful activity with hell.

"The blessed are passionate about what really matters - the image of God in those around them." P. 73.
Cook next talks about the Tower of Babel, wherein men were trying to escape the world. Instead, we see God always "longs to enter our sphere and make his home with us.". The parallel story to the Tower of Babel is Pentecost when God came and filled the house and then filled the believers. "The movement of God is to fill. While at Babel the people want to escape the world, at Pentecost God entered it." p. 76

On to the beatitude:

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled". We need to be STARVING for God. Note the prodigal son. He did not return because he wanted a relationship but because he was starving.

Jesus was not addressing those who have all their "junk in order" but those with "wrecked moral lives." So wrecked, in fact, that he associated their pain with starvation." (p. 80)

"Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness - who hobble along with deep aches, who press on through difficulty, knowing a fire and a meal are waiting - will be blessed by God, for he has the power to fill them." (p. 80-81)

"Sloth - indifference towards our souls - alone will keep us from the life we were made for. Sloth will praise the ruts we dig... but it is all a lie. We are made to overflow with life." "God is moving you and me from places where our lives are foul into realms of refreshment.. . He is slowly cutting away the gangrene. . . . We have nothing to hold onto but a promise as we endure surgery. . . . But the promise is beautiful. You will be made whole. You will be filled and your fullness will overflow everywhere." p. 81Lots of food for thought for a hungry man. :-)

How We Got to Now (Part II)

This is part II of a book review on "How We Got to Now" by Steven Johnson.

Continuing on in the six innovations that made the modern world: 

CLEAN

The book includes a very interesting story about how they built sewers in Chicago in the mid 1800's. Chicago was too flat so there was no way to slope sewers down to the lake. But the burgeoning population had led to a real problem with waste. So Ellis Chesbrough had the idea of raising the entire city several feet using jackscrews and building sewers under the raised buildings and streets. 




























This worked marvelously but the unexpected consequence was too much waste flowing into the drinking supply and a resulting rise in diseases like cholera. 
The solution to this problem was not evident until the rise of the germ theory of disease. Until the mid to late 1800's, people bathed rarely, thinking that opening up the pores by bathing would let disease in. They also believe that disease was caused by vapors and smells. 

There were two innovations that helped uncover the true reason for disease. John Snow did "epidemiological detective work" mapping out deaths of a cholera epidemic in Soho, London and pointing out that all the deaths were centered around common water taps. He deduced that there must be "animalcules" in the water that caused the disease. Later further improvements in glass led to better microscopes which helped with the identification of the cholera bacterium. (p. 140-141)

John Leal was a New Jersey doctor who came up with the idea of using chlorine to treat the 7 billion gallons of drinking water in the river. He did this secretly and was even tried for what were seen as terrorist actions. Eventually vindicated, he allowed his idea to be used freely across the country, allowing a 43% drop in the mortality rate between 1900 and 1930, and a 74% drop in the infant mortality rate. (p. 142-148). 
A knock-on effect of the chlorination was that public swimming pools became possible, which led in turn to a change in the sort of attire people wore when swimming, especially women. 

Finally, CLEAN allows the fabrication of computers which must be done in totally clean environments. Those super clean environments are actually so clean that humans can not enter without special clothing. They use special super clean water that is so purified it will kill you if you drink it (leaching out minerals from your body). 


TIME

Another key idea of Johnson's book is that increases in our ability to measure something always have an important effect. This is especially true in the realm of time. From the beginning of time until the middle ages, it was adequate to know the time to within a few hours. By medieval times, it was okay if you knew the time to the nearest hour. And that was all well and good because we couldn't measure it any more precisely than that that. Medieval mechanical clocks had to be reset DAILY to the sundial, losing as much as 20 minutes a day. 

In 1583, a 19-year old Galileo noticed that hanging lamps in his church swung at an even rate - in equal times. This allowed him to make a clock that was much more accurate - to the minute. 
This was highly sought after because it allowed the correct calculation of the longitude that was necessary for navigating ships very far out at see. You needed two clocks - one set to the correct time on land, and another set to the time at your location (gauged by the sun). This could tell you your longitude, but was not possible until Galileo's clock.

Accurate clocks allowed for the industrial revolution. Clocks made shipping possible, which provided the raw materials for industry. Making timepieces increased skill in fine machinery, including the idea of making parts of uniform sizes. And the clock allowed for synchronizing the actions and schedules of workers on a large scale. 

The introduction of the clock into the work world meant an enormous change in our culture, how we lived and worked. 
    "To be a Romantic at the turn of the nineteenth century was in part to break from the growing tyranny of clock time: to sleep late, ramble aimlessly through the city, refuse to live by the “statistical clocks” that governed economic life… The time discipline of the pendulum clock took the informal flow of experience and nailed it to a mathematical grid. If time is a river, the pendulum clock turned it into a canal of evenly spaced locks, engineered for the rhythms of industry. Once again, an increase in our ability to measure things turned out to be as important as our ability to make them." (p. 176)
The first leap in time measure was when it went from being measured by astronomy (sun dial) to dynamics (pendulum). The next leap came with the invention of the quartz crystal in the 1880's, which vibrated at a remarkable stable frequency. This became the basis for watches in the 20th century as well as for science and the development of microprocessors which need highly accurate coordination of calculations. The quartz crystal also showed up fluctuations in solar days and years. 

The next leap came with the atomic clock, using the vibration atomic particles. This precision allows for the international banking, air travel, GPS and more. 

LIGHT

Artificial light was one of our first inventions (fire) and did not have a lot of advances through the ages - oil lamps and candles were fairly standard fare for centuries. 
The first breakthrough came in the 1700s with the advent of whaling for sperm whales. Whale oil was taken from a cavity in its head - someone had to actually climb in there and scrape it out. This made exceptionally bright and longer lasting candles. 
Less than a century later came the advent of kerosene which saved the whales and costs a lot less. 

In fact, there are various measures of inflation or purchase power through the ages. One is the cost of light. 
"If you worked for an hour at the average wage of 1800, you could buy yourself ten minutes of artificial light. With kerosene in 1880, the same hour of work would give you three hours of reading at night. Today, you can buy three hundred days of artificial light with an hour of wages." (p. 205)
The story of invention the light bulb is one of those situations where factors came together and numerous people were inventing the light bulb over decades. There are over 20 patents from 1838 to 1879 for lightbulbs similar to what Edison finally produced. Johnson says that what was amazing abut Edison was the way he proceeded. He built a team of experts from various disciplines to work out the various aspects. He paid them in equity, rather than in cash - promising part of the eventual profits. And he had an excellent PR machine, built around hype. 

Johnson proposes that "Edison invented the lightbulb the way Steve Jobs invented the MP3 player: he wasn't the first, but he was the first to make something that took off in the marketplace." (p. 209). He also came up with an entire ecosystem to support his lightbulb - building meters to measure electricity consumption and wiring an entire neighborhood in New York to display it. 

Flash Photography was another thing that came about as a matter of course. "You could have reasonably predicted that the problem of photographing in lo light would be 'solved' by 1900. What was unpredictable was how this was used by Jacob Riis to shed light (quite literally) on the problem of horrendous conditions in tenement houses in New York. He and others had written up reports and studies but could not raise interest because no one could SEE how bad it was. He tried sketches. Photographs didn't work because the buildings were so dark. But flash photography made it possible to get the images out there and affect social change. 

Lasers were the stuff of science fiction and death rays until they were finally made practical. They allowed for the bar code scanner in the 1970s. Rather than killing of aliens, they had the effect of killing of mom and pop businesses. Large stores simply were not possible if you could not track the inventory. Adding bar code technology allowed this and benefited the bigger stores with no perceptible benefit to the smaller stores.

Time Travelers

Johnson closes his book looking at Time Travelers. Up until now, the innovations he had shown always existed by people moving out into the "adjacent possible" gradually as it was advanced by more understanding. But occasionally there were people who would think up something centuries ahead of their time. An example is Davinci sketching helicopters and tanks and flying machines in the 1500s. 

Another example was August Ada, the daughter of Lord Byron, who lived in the Victorian Age. She dabbled in the arts but loved mathematics and eventually worked with Charles Babbage. Babbage designed a truly programmable computer. His concept was right but he was limited by the technology of the day. Still it contained all the major elements, including the idea of code. And Ada wrote code for him. She somehow was able to see possible uses for the computer that he couldn't even imagine - for music or art. He simply saw it as a number cruncher. 

What makes people "Time Travelers", able to see way beyond the horizon? Johnson posits that they are people who have very broad interests, with learning in many fields and hobbies in others. They worked at the intersection of many fields. The idea of a garage lab is one that fits into this - having space to tinker with projects laid out side by side for crossfertilization.

I would highly recommend this book - or the PBS/BBC series of the same name. There are 6 episodes, one for each of the chapters. I've only seen one and there is some overlap in content but they are not identical.

Book Review: How We Got to Now (part 1)


How We Got to Now : Six innovations that Made the Modern World
by Steven Johnson

Steven looks at six innovations  - Glass, Cold, Sound, Clean, Time, Light.
And how in each case, there were unexpected knock-on effects. He calls this the hummingbird effect. Often there are unrelated things that come together or social change that comes about because of a major innovation or subsequent related innovations and ripples of change that can not be undone. 

One key concept is the idea of "the adjacent possible".  
"How do we explain this breakthrough? it's not just a matter of a solitary genius coming up with a brilliant invention because he or she is smarter than everyone else. And that's because ideas are fundamentally networks of other ideas. We take the tools and metaphors and concepts and scientific understanding of our time, and we remix them into something  new. But if you don't have the right building blocks, you can't make the breakthrough , however brilliant you might be. The smartest mind in the world couldn't invent a refrigerator in the middle of the 17th century. It simply wasn't part of the adjacent possible at that moment. But by 1850, the pieces have come together ." p. 64
In many cases, this is evidenced by many different people inventing the same thing over and over again in the space of a few decades, in different places around the world. All the pieces are in place and the need is there. 

In addition to interesting stories and backstories about inventors and inventions, I found the social effects of inventions to be fascinating. Here are some random things I found interesting in the book - following the chapters Steven Johnson laid out. 

GLASS

The fall of Constantinople (1204) caused some Turkish glass-makers to settle in Venice, where they were relocated to an island because they kept setting fire to the wooden structures of the town. Living together there was cross-fertilization of ideas and techniques allowing higher quality lenses. 

Spectacles had up until then invented to help monks copying manuscripts. With the invention of the Gutenberg's printing press, suddenly lots of people across Europe realized they could not see well. The increased demand for glasses increased the precision of lenses again.  
Then someone tried putting 2 lenses end to end and eventually developed 1) the telescope, which changed our idea about the cosmos and threatened long-held beliefs, and 2) the microscope which also radically changed our understanding of disease and how to fight it. 

Finally glass allowed for the mirror, which transformed how painters saw the world. By looking at their subject in a mirror, they could see the perspective lines and that led to increased realism. Likewise, the mirror led to "self-consciousness, introspection" and the idea of self as opposed to community began to develop and become a major factor in western Civilization. 

COLD

In 1805 Frederic Tudor sailed a ship filled with ice carved out of New England lakes to the Caribbean with the idea of selling "cold" to the tropics. At first no one could figure out what it was for. And this problem persisted for decades, until he figured out how to keep it and store it (in ice houses lined with sawdust). By the 1820's he was shipping it all over the American south and by the 1830's to Rio and India. By 1860, 2 out of 3 American homes were supplied with daily Ice. 

Ice played a major factor in the growth of Chicago as a hub of shipping meat from Midwest. Previously, this was limited to sending live cattle in freight cars. But with Ice available along the route, they made ice cars that could carry butchered meat to the East Coast and Chicago became a major hub. 

The next step was artificial refrigeration which grew up in the 1840's by a desire to cool patients suffering from Malaria in Florida. Various devices were invented in this period but did not go far as the natural ice was abundant. Then the Civil War led to a blockade of the South, Without natural ice, they pushed on with artificial machines to produce ice.

Air Conditioning came about in public spaces between 1925 and 1940. And made radical changes in how we organize our society. It allowed for a boom in movie attendance in the summer, where it had been prohibitively hot before. 
After WWII, Wide-scale air-conditioning spread to homes and allowed for more and more people to settle in hotter climates. There were social effects: Northern Republicans moving into Southern Democrat strongholds. Florida, Texas and California gaining electoral votes. 

SOUND

Edison and Alexander Graham Bell both had important sound-related inventions: the phonograph and the telephone. But they misjudged the eventual use of their own inventions. Edison thought phonographs would be used to send messages through the mail that had been pre-recorded. Bell thought his invention would be a way to listen to music: with orchestras playing music on one end of the line and people listening on the other. In effect, they had the impact of their inventions switched. 

A side effect of the invention of the telephone was the rise of Bell Labs, which was a hotbed collaborative environment that led to countless developments. Due to an anti-trust agreement in the 1950's, Bell could keep its phone monopoly but had to share the fruits of its research department with other companies, allowing for American success in postwar electronics. 

The advent of the vacuum tube led to radio transmissions. It didn't take long before music was added to broadcasts. A surprising development was that due to static and poor transmission classical music did not sound good on the radio, but it lent it self well to jazz, which was then introduced to a wide audience. This made celebrities of African Americans, bringing them into living rooms and opening the door one day for the civil rights movement. 

Amplification of sound via microphones also had unexpected social effects. Up until this time, revolutions were spread my large crowds acting in mass. After the microphone, social movements could be fostered around individual who could speak to and mobilize larger and larger crowds. This was true for Hitler and Martin Luther King, Jr. 

Finally, the invention of sonar. It was envisaged as a way to warn ships of danger. But had unexpected usage for good and evil. Its inventor could not imagine the health benefits we derive from the sonogram. Or that this same technology would be used in China to determine the sex of a baby in utero and lead to widespread abortions of female babies.

The Culture of Fear: Book review

The Culture of Fear: 

Why Americans Are Afraid of the Wrong Things: 

Crime, Drugs, Minorities, Teen Moms, Killer Kids, Mutant Microbes, Plane Crashes, Road Rage, & So Much More

I first came across this book by Barry Glassner while visiting friends and noted it down as one to order on Kindle. 


When I finally got my e-copy, I was a bit disappointed to note that it was written in 1999. While it has an introduction and new final chapter written in 2010, the bulk of the book and most of the examples come from the time before 9/11, when it seemed fear ramped up a few notches. Still the principles in the book hold true and even provide a reminder that the voices of fear were loud and clear in the 80s and 90s as well, as well as providing examples that are no longer hot topics.

While Glassner appears to fall on the liberal side of the political scale, he is not afraid to call both liberals and conservatives to task for engaging in fearmongering. The book makes its point well, if not too well, giving each example a well-documented chapter. 

In his book, Glassner seeks to answer the question: “Why are Americans so fearful lately, and why are our fears so often misplaced?”

According to Glassner, “The short answer … is that immense power and money await those who tap into our moral insecurities and supply us with symbolic substitutes.”

Fear can be used to arouse voters, attract donations, raise ratings, and sell products or laws that would protect us all the while making some people rich.

“Every society has an almost infinite quantity of potential dangers from which to choose. … Dangers get selected for special emphasis . . .  either because they offend the basic moral principles of the society or because they enable criticism of disliked groups and institutions.”

One of Glassner’s main points is that the media or other elements will project fear of one thing because we are afraid or unable to talk about the real issue – something we do not want to or cannot face.  The media love crime stories that enable them to cover a phenomenon they are having trouble covering in its own right.”

“Consider, for example, the panic over violence against children. By failing to provide adequate education, nutrition, housing, parenting, medical services, and child care over the past couple of decades we have done the nation’s children immense harm. Yet we project our guilt onto a cavalcade of bogey people—pedophile preschool teachers, preteen mass murderers,”

Glassner spends chapter after chapter dealing with “trumped up scares”, pseudo-dangers, which function as sleight of hand does for a magician to misdirect our attention from something else that is going on.  Examples include





  • The Halloween Candy scare which swept the nation in the 60s and 70s. A serious study done of every reported case from 1958 showed no serious injuries or deaths, only 2 cases perpetrated by family members trying to cover up crimes or accidents caused within the family and not by strangers. [Real danger: much greater incidence of violence against children from within the home, not from strangers.] 














  • Road Rage – 1998, LA Times declared that the Pacific NW was “plagued by a rise in road rage” but eventually the same article reveals that there had only been 5 cases in 5 years. Still as the topic du jour spread in the news, police, authorities were more likely to call things “road rage” than they would have in the past.  [Real problems: overcrowded highways. Superabundance of guns. Unable to face those head on, so narrow it down to people in cars with guns.]
  • Political correctness. “So rather than engage in honest debate with campus liberals and progressives, conservatives labeled them “politically correct.”
  • Granny Dumping – “Like other scares about maltreatment of the elderly, the granny dumping scare played off the younger generations’ guilt while letting the individual reader or viewer off the hook by focusing on particularly evil people.”


  • Crack Kids, a scare which never materialized. In fact, studies showed  crack children did very well if they had good nutrition and environments. Those who didn’t performed comparably to other children raised in poverty. “Crack babies in fact served as screens on which the American public could displace its worries about the youngest generation as a whole—fears that the young, having been cheated and neglected, would become ‘an unmanageable multitude’ or ‘a lost generation,’ We focused on the crack baby crisis because, unlike our deeper fears, the crack baby crisis was contained. It existed only in other people’s neighborhoods, and it could be solved if only pregnant women would keep away from crack.”
  • War on Drugs (declared the nation’s greatest crisis by George Bush, Sr.). Crack cocaine “the most addictive drug known to man... an epidemic ...”
o   In the 1870s in San Francisco, 20,000 Chinese laborers were put out of work after the completion of the transcontinental railroad. Facing a recession, society focused attention on the dangers of the “opium dens” to provide an excuse to deny Chinese immigrants jobs.
o   Similarly in the 1980s –“as poverty, homelessness, and associated urban ills increased noticeably, Presidents Reagan and Bush, along with much of the electorate, sidestepped the suffering of millions of their fellow citizens who had been harmed by policies favoring the wealthy. Rather than face up to their own culpability, they blamed a drug. “Crack is responsible.”
  • Metaphorical Illnesses – provide an opportunity to criticize powerful societal institutions.

o   Gulf-war syndrome; supposedly caused by a mysterious microbe soldiers brought back, ”Gulf War Syndrome provided an occasion for criticizing the Pentagon—something that none of the main participants in the war had much motivation to do about the war itself.” GWS led people to get medical tests rather than psychological counseling “even when their stories make clear that anxiety, fear, and anger are among their symptoms”.
o   Cancer caused by faulty breast implants – “implants represent the literal embodiment of male oppression.” Science eventually disproved the claims but Billions were paid out in settlements.  Doctors were paid big money to testify in court cases.

Statistics

Producers of TV newsmagazines routinely let emotional accounts trump objective information. These can then be augmented by statistics that concentrate on percentages instead of real numbers, which can easily trick the listener.

“When a problem is said to have multiplied it is a good idea to ask, ‘From what size to what size?’ When advocacy groups use surveys to draw attention to their causes the reported change…is often from small to slightly less small.” Glassner cites an article about the rise of anti-Semitism on campus which was said to have “more than doubled”. If you read closely, you find that that it went from 54 incidents to 114 incidents – Double, yes, but hardly a huge amount considering there are 3,600 colleges and universities in the US.

Even stories that are debunked as false can come back years later.

A scare can continue long after its rightful expiration date so long as it has two things going for it: it has to tap into current cultural anxieties, and it has to have media-savvy advocates behind it.”  

It helps if you can find a celebrity victim who can become a pseudo expert.

“The success of a scare depends not only on how well it is expressed but also, as I have tried to suggest, on how well it expresses deeper cultural anxieties”

Facts are not important when the scare SOUNDS like a logical thing.

 Take for example “Teenage Motherhood” as a harbinger of societal decline. (Ignore the facts that “The teenage birth rate reached its highest level in the 1950s, not the current era. Indeed, between 1991 and 1996 the rate declined by nearly 12 percent.”)

The facts show little difference in outcomes (criminality, dropout rates, drug use) between children of teenage mothers and children of older mothers when you factor in their socioeconomic circumstances. “The age at which a woman gives birth appears to be far less consequential for how her child turns out than are factors such as her level of income and education, and whether she suffered physical and emotional abuse in her own youth”

Fears in society can feed off of each other.

Even as feminists disparage large classes of men, they themselves are a staple of fear mongering by conservatives.” Liberals fears feed Conservative fears which feed Liberal fears.

The cost of dealing with false fears can vastly outweigh what it would cost to deal with real problems. Attention to Road Rage took money and energy away from the very real problem of drunk drivers during the 90s.

The media like to report on Air Safety issues, which have a stellar record in the US. But they ignore things like work place safety, even though “more than 5,000 Americans died in work-related fatalities each year. Almost 7 million suffered injuries.

Why? Because “news is what happens to editors” and editors fly a lot. So we have weekly scare stories about Air Safety and none about workplace injuries. So long before 9/11 Bill Clinton signed a $1 billion bill for airport security.

Without realizing it, our society pays a “fear tax” and willingly takes on new costs and limits to our freedom to assuage our fears.

The 10th anniversary edition of the book has a Final Chapter, written after 9/11

In the original edition, Glassner had posited that it would take an external “Pearl Harbor” type event to draw our attention away from the imaginary “puffed up” fears of the 90s.  And then 9/11 happened and his hypothesis was proved somewhat true. The old narrative of the “sick society” with a lack of heroes, and the decline of American society, was no longer a useful one. “That narrative is incompatible with another that came to the fore after the terrorist attacks. The new narrative was about national unity, villains from foreign lands, and the greatness of American society. One result of this new narrative was a shift in the putative dangerousness of certain categories of people and behaviors.”

9/11 led to the use of apocalyptic language: “war on terror”, Weapons of Mass destruction. Color-coded terror levels always in view (and upgraded based on information not available to the public but cited as ‘credible and reliable sources”).

And ten years later, we find ourselves in a world where “the demand for security is like an obsession, spreading relentlessly, for which there is no rational counterargument.” (Josef Joffe, editor of the German newspaper Die Zeit, in an op-ed in the Washington Post)

So what is the counterpoint to fear? 

Glassner does not provide one.  Scripture, however, encourages us not to be caught up in the fears of the world and to counter fear with Faith and Hope.

Isaiah 8:12  “Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it.”

Psalm 91: 1-6  Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,  nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
